The First Curiosity Cabinets

Curiosity Cabinets first came about in the 18th century during the exciting new age of exploration. They were often owned by prominent men who traveled to strange, new parts of the world, such as the jungles of Africa and the rainforests of South America. On their voyages, they recorded the many new animals and plants they discovered, often bringing back samples of their finds in more than simple, leather-bound journals.

Rather, their samples consisted of whole animal skeletons, furs, plant and insect specimens, and much more. When they returned home, they placed their finds in giant rooms full of shelves to house the treasures. The walls, floors, and even ceilings would be lined with things from the natural worlds, and these old collections became known as Cabinets of Curiosities. Some of these strange items included whale vertebrae, shark bodies filled with sawdust, stuffed animals, hundreds of insect species, narwhale tusks, and more.
